You should read this section if you only have limited experience of the Internet or an Intranet. It is assumed that you are familiar with the basic operation of your computer and have already used PC programs.
How is Impact Ordering different from a PC program?
Impact Ordering is an Intranet application. The information that you see and edit is not stored directly on your computer. The program data and the data managed using Impact Ordering is located on your company’s Intranet server.
You can access the Intranet using your web browser. As a registered user, you can call up Impact Ordering and work with the data stored in the application to the extent that your user rights allow. The browser plays the role of a mediator. It loads the requested information, such as your user data or catalog data, and displays it on web pages. These pages are part of the program. They are similar to the various windows in a PC program, for example, dialogue box windows or selection windows. Depending on the page that you have accessed and your user rights, you can display or edit information, navigate to other pages and call up functions for the data displayed.
In a PC program, controls, such as menu commands, buttons, icons and toolbars, are normally provided for navigation and to display and edit information. In Impact Ordering, you will recognize many of the familiar controls, including pages with tabs, selection lists and so on.
Navigating in Impact Ordering
The pages of Impact Ordering are connected by links. Links are often also referred to as hyperlinks.
If you click on a link (a simple left click with the mouse is enough), the corresponding destination page is opened for viewing or editing.
Links can be represented by text or icons.
For example, you can click the icon on the Lobby page to display a message that you have received.
Text that acts as a link is shown in blue and underlined in Impact Ordering. The online help also uses the same method to highlight links.
You can also recognize links by the fact that the mouse pointer changes from its normal appearance to a hand when it is positioned over a link.
Sometimes you have to be patient
When you are working in Impact Ordering, data is constantly being exchanged between your browser and the server. This can take longer than you are used to in programs that are installed on your computer. Whenever you use a link to request a new page or call up a function, the corresponding data has to be loaded from the Intranet server to your browser. If you have edited data, it must be sent back to the server so that it will be permanently available in Impact Ordering.
These procedures, which you cannot see or influence, take a certain amount of time. Overload problems, on the Intranet for example, can lead to delays in loading pages.
At all times, you should bear in mind the following: if you have called up a page, it can take some time before it is fully displayed on your screen. Repeatedly clicking on the link does not speed up the loading of the page, it causes additional delays. Online help pages are also stored on the server, so they too may take a moment to load.
